How time flies! Old reliable – Vmware vSphere 5.5 – is set for retirement in September of this year, meaning it will no longer be supported as of September 19, 2018.

See the Entire VMware Lifecycle Matrix

It’s had a good run and due to its impressive stability and wide adoption, I still see it deployed within many of our clients’ environments.

So what now? Our recommendation is to upgrade your systems to vSphere 6.5. Not only do you get the essential extension of support, but some really great new features.

Sizing Guide for VMware Horizon Servers and Access Points

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Lewan Solutions [fa icon="calendar'] June 21, 2017 [fa icon="tags'] VMware, How To Guide, PowerShell, VMware vSphere, VMware Horizon

Often times I’m called in to perform a health check of a VMware Horizon environment due to a performance or operational issue. These issues make the environment unstable and effect user productivity. There are various things we can do in the environment to optimize the persistent or non-persistent virtual desktops, but first we need to make sure the virtual desktop infrastructure is configured properly.

Proper configuration entails proper server sizing. More often than not, these servers are not sized properly. Under-sizing causes performance issues and over-sizing wastes resources.

How to Deploy VMware Horizon Access Point via PowerShell

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Lewan Solutions [fa icon="calendar'] May 24, 2017 [fa icon="tags'] VMware, How To Guide, PowerShell, VMware vSphere

The VMware Horizon Access Point greatly reduces the amount of resources needed for the redundant or non-redundant Horizon Environment.

Previously when deploying Security Server, a single Security Server needed to be sized as a Connection Server which is 4vCPU and 12GB of RAM. If you combine that with the Connection Server that the Security Server is paired with, the Connection Server is once again 4vCPU and 12GB of RAM. If this was a redundant environment your Connection Server and Security Server infrastructure tallies up to 24vCPU and 72Gb of RAM (2 Internal Connection Servers, 2 External Connection Servers and 2 Security Servers all sized at 4vCPU and 12GB of RAM).

VMware Horizon 7 upgrade planned? Check your crypto!

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Lewan Solutions [fa icon="calendar'] May 5, 2016 [fa icon="tags'] Virtualization, VMware, How To Guide, Cloud Computing, IT Solutions, VMware vCenter

Here at Lewan HQ we have a robust internal lab where we demo solutions and hardware for customers and train our team. The lab gives us the opportunity to actually touch and test products before evaluating or installing onsite for clients.

As part of our lab, we have a complete VMware Horizon Enterprise deployment with all the bells and whistles and integrated technologies from our other hardware and software partners. This allows us to do expanded testing beyond what the primary manufacturers can do.

Today that was integration testing for VMware Horizon 7, and I learned a few things I wish I'd known before I started. I hope this post saves you the time I spent troubleshooting cryptographic protocol issues and makes for a more seamless upgrade of your infrastructure!

Do you know what VMWare vSphere version you're running? If its 5.1 or below, it's time to think about upgrading so you don't lose support.

Last week I went into a customer environment to talk about infrastructure planning and found that they were on an old 4.x version of vSphere, which went end-of-general-support back in 2014, yikes!
