How To: Azure Resource Manager VM Level Backup & Restore Without Snapshots

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Phillip Martin [fa icon="calendar'] August 25, 2016 [fa icon="tags'] Data Backup & Recovery, Microsoft, How To Guide, Microsoft Windows, PowerShell, Microsoft Azure

One basic task I found very underwhelming in the Microsoft Azure Resource Manager (ARM) portal was the backup. If you're thinking about taking a snapshot of a server as a precaution before you make any updates—sorry—snapshots don’t exist. You'll have to replace snapshots with backup and restore. I’ll break this down into the three parts: Backup, Recover, and Restore.

NetScaler Website Redirection - The Nice & Elegant Way

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Lewan Solutions [fa icon="calendar'] August 10, 2016 [fa icon="tags'] Citrix, Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop, How To Guide, NetScaler

Did you know that you can configure NetScaler so users don’t have to type in the https:// when going to StoreFront or the NetScaler Gateway URLs?

More often than not, this is accomplished using a crude method in which port 80 http Virtual Server is configured on the same IP as the https site and the Redirect URL field in the protection section of the Virtual Server is set. While this works just fine, it unfortunately also renders a permanently Down Virtual Server in the Load Balancing screen.

Good news though, there is a better way to configure the redirection that renders all of the Virtual Servers as Up by using Responder Policies.

Paper Weight & Printing - how is it calculated and why does it matter?

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Lewan Solutions [fa icon="calendar'] July 29, 2016 [fa icon="tags'] How To Guide, Paper, Printers & Copiers

Guest post by Eric Norris, who leads training and certification for our printer repair and copier service team at Lewan Technology.

Ever try running an extra thick piece of paper through your printer only to have it cause a pain-in-the-you-know-what jam?

If you’re like the rest of us, you have. (Queue paper jam meme #1)

Even if you’re running the sheet of paper through the bypass tray (which can accommodate specialty papers more readily), can one sheet of paper really make that much of a difference?

Yes.

Bug FIx: View Templates Folder in Azure Resource Manager Premium Storage

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Phillip Martin [fa icon="calendar'] July 20, 2016 [fa icon="tags'] Citrix, Microsoft, Citrix XenApp, How To Guide, PowerShell

I recently ran into a snag where my Citrix XenApp Session Host was created in my Azure Premium Storage account. When you capture an image as a template, Azure places the template in the same storage account in which the server is currently running.

The Template folder is hidden by default in the ARM portal. You can use Azure Storage Explorer to navigate and see the Templates folder to get the template path and vhd name. However, the Storage Explorer doesn’t show the Template folder in the Premium Storage account. I can only guess that this is a bug.

Here’s a work around by running a few PowerShell commands. Now I’m able to see the Template folder right from the ARM portal.

The new Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop 7.9 has a lot to offer and worth making the upgrade, but being at the front of the line to implement a new release can also come with the risk of a few bugs. Here’s one we've come across and a quick fix to resolve the error.

How to Manually Populate the Software Cache in CommVault v11

[fa icon="pencil'] Posted by Dan Booth [fa icon="calendar'] June 28, 2016 [fa icon="tags'] Virtualization, Data Backup & Recovery, How To Guide, CommVault

In prior versions, the ability to populate the software cache was done automatically but this feature has been removed. But by manually populating the software cache, the push of agents in the environment can be done immediately after the upgrade of the CommCell versus waiting hours for the automatic download to finish.

In this post I’ll walk you through the steps required to populate the software cache using the Copy Software feature built into CommVault.
